RISE Germany
Description: RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) is administered by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), the German equivalent of Fulbright in the United States. It offers undergraduate students the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions.
Time frame: Summer.
Location: Varies (within Germany).
Financing and Accommodations: The program is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and matches students with a host university or institute according to their area of interest (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, or a closely related field). The DAAD provides a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses, while the host institution offers housing assistance and match students with Ph.D. student mentors or researchers. Successful applicants shoulder the cost of the flight or seek out assistance on campus independently.
German Language: German is not required, as the working language will be in English. However, your daily and social life will benefit from knowing some German, and we recommend taking German 1 or higher (if placed) prior to applying.
Application and Deadlines: Interested students apply independently, though they are encouraged to discuss the application with their science and engineering mentors at Dartmouth. The mid-October deadline is announced on the RISE website/application portal, which also describes the application and publicizes the information session. Students should approach their recommenders early, giving them at least a month's notice (or longer), and attend the information session.
