Teaching in Austria (USTA)

Description: US Teaching Assistantship (USTA) Program is managed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and administered by Fulbright Austria, though it is distinct from the Fulbright program. Successful applicants are placed in secondary school (Gymnasium, student age range: 11 to 18 years or 14 to 18 years) or vocational secondary school focusing on business, engineering, preschool teacher training, hospitality, etc. (students' age range: 14 to 19 years). Open to US citizens (incl. dual US citizens who completed bachelor's degree by the summer of the year when the program begins. Previous applicants for and holders of a Fulbright grant elsewhere are eligible to apply and encouraged to do so to increase their chances. Recent German department graduates with a completed BA or MA and interest in teaching in Austria can also apply. There is no campus committee or interview.

Time Frame: Austrian academic year, usually October 1 – May 31. Applicants will be notified in spring prior to the program and waitlisted candidates could be offered spots between April and July.

Location: Varies (within Austria).

Financing and Accommodations: Teaching assistants are insured and salaried instead of receiving a stipend or grant (numbers from 2024–25: monthly gross salary of approx. €1,945/ $2,176; monthly net salary of approx. €1,575/ around $1,762).

German Language: German proficiency level of at least B1/Intermediate Mid by the time of application.

Application and Deadlines: There is no campus endorsement for this program, which means that you apply directly on the online application platform. The application is open between November 15 and January 15; however, always check the website for the current year's dates and info session schedules.
