On June 7, two days before we bid farewell to the graduating students in our majors and minors program, we saw off Chlodwig Petzl, our AY 2025–26 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant, as he returned to his native Austria after a year of outstanding service to the Department of German Studies at Dartmouth.
In a surprise turn of events, one of our previous FLTAs, Winfried Stangl, traveled from Europe to campus and joined Chlodwig together with faculty representees Petra McGillen, new Chair of German Studies, and Nick Ostrau, German Language Program Director and FLTA Primary Supervisor, for Chlodwig's farewell breakfast.
Our Fulbright TAs from past years frequently stay in contact with the department by visiting campus or meeting with participants during visits to Vienna on one of our off-campus programs.
Every year, a German or Austrian student sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs comes to Dartmouth and enhances our beginning and intermediate language curriculum.
The Fulbright TA helps Dartmouth students perform communicative tasks in the classroom, facilitates structured conversations, supports our beginning language drill leader workshops, organizes social events, and offers a young person's perspective on life in the German-speaking countries. The TA also serves as Resident Advisor at the Max Kade German Center.
As we bid farewell to Chlodwig, he is already in contact with our AY 2026–27 Fulbright TA, Laurin Klockner, whom we look forward to welcoming to campus this fall.
